MyBB > vBulletin Developers

I’ve been with vBulletin since January 2004. I love the product and the add ons that it provides on vBulletin.org. I absolutely can’t stand the development pace. MyBB recently made an announcement that MyBB will be losing PHP4 and going with PHP 5.2 as a minimum requirement. They also will be suggesting users use MySQL 5.1 once it becomes the stable recommended release. MyBB is looking more and more like a legitimate competitor to vBulletin with every new release they put out. I’m actually considering using it for a new board I am considering starting. Especially once the new release comes out removing all the support for PHP 4.

Come on vBulletin. I’m paying you 160 dollars for the license and 30 bucks to renew for what? One new release every year and a half? Not cool at all.

I’m not denying that vBulletin 4 will be a great product, it’s just the development time for vBulletin has gotten worse and worse over the years it seems.

I would forget MyBB, I agree it’s getting close as a free option to use using vBulletin. Because they are very similar.

But with IPB3 around the corner, I personally think that will be the vBulletin punch now. I’m not expecting big things from vBulletin 4. They don’t seem to have the manpower and resources to do a total re-write like IPB are doing with IPB3. And my feeling is, this is why vBulletin 4 will be XHTML Strict, not because they don’t want to to be. But because they know it would mean a total re-write of all the code.

And if I was to be honest, I think when the previous owner of vBulletin sold the software to Internet Brands, I honesty think he knew the writing was on the wall, and he could see that IPB was starting to take sales away from vBulletin and move ahead for the first time as the number one. I think he sold at the right time!

I would have to agree with mrGTB on this one. IPB3 is a huge blow to vB. They are leaps and bounds ahead of vB now. They have a great development team and they are moving into number 1 and not looking back.
